  Highway RaatThe truck-cabin canon. These are the songs that play on the long dark stretch of national highway when there is nothing on either side and the driver has another four hours to go. Heavy on separation, distance and letters from home — the three subjects that Hindi film music has always understood better than anyone.

  Saloon ClassicsEvery barbershop in small-town India runs a radio or a phone on a speaker all day, and it lands on roughly the same thirty songs. Mid-tempo, melodic, nothing that startles a man holding a razor. This is that rotation, as heard from the chair with a cloth around your neck.
